ILLUMINATE
Ideas and insights for your next smart move.
FOUR STORIES. ONE SHIFT.
The Screen Is No Longer
the Product
Four moves in the market right now, and the single shift underneath them.
The shift underneath the headlines
The customer is no longer simply buying a display.
They are buying the system around it.
Every week, our team reads the Illuminology Market Pulse, a short scan of what moved in digital signage and what it should change about how we work.
Most weeks, the stories are unrelated. This month, they were not.
Four moves, in four different corners of the market, described the same shift:
The value in a display project is migrating off the panel and into the system the panel sits in.
That changes what is worth asking on your next opportunity.
Here is what happened, what is underneath it, and what we would do differently because of it.
Retail Media
A Grocery Chain Just Turned Its Screens Into Media Inventory
What changed
ZetaDisplay is building SPAR Central Europe’s first retail media network, combining hundreds of new displays with existing screens repositioned around how shoppers move through the store.
The network connects content management, targeting, analytics and measurement, while SPAR retains control over which advertisers can appear across the network.
Why it matters
A screen budget just became a revenue line.
The moment a network can carry paid media, placement stops being only an aesthetic decision and becomes an inventory decision. Measurement also stops being an optional upgrade, because advertisers need to know what ran, where it ran and what it delivered.
CMS
The CMS Is Becoming Something Other Software Operates
What changed
Yodeck has launched an AI Agent that can manage screens, playlists, schedules, workspaces and other signage tasks through natural-language instruction.
The important detail is how it connects: through Model Context Protocol, which allows AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude to interact with the signage platform.
Why it matters
This is not simply a chatbot added to a dashboard.
The CMS itself is becoming addressable, something other software can operate.
Playlists and scheduling were already table stakes. The next evaluation happens one layer deeper.
Connected Kiosks
The Kiosk Is One Touchpoint Inside an Ordering System
What changed
Across 78 Wendy’s locations
Pilot has added 156 self-order kiosks across 78 Wendy’s locations as part of a broader effort to create a more connected ordering experience across in-store ordering, mobile apps, loyalty programs and third-party delivery.
The kiosks are the visible part.
The integration is where the real system lives.
Why it matters
The hardware count may be the easiest line to quote, but the connections are what determine the real scope.
LED / System Architecture
The LED Spec Sheet Is Moving Beyond the Panel
What changed
Large-format LED conversations are changing.
Pixel pitch, brightness, refresh rate and cabinet dimensions still matter, but they no longer tell the whole story.
As All-in-One LED becomes easier to deploy and modular LED systems become more sophisticated, more of the project value is moving into the architecture around the display.
Why it matters
Pixel pitch, brightness and price compare panels. They do not compare complete systems.
The controller, processing, signal path, service access, installation method, power requirements and long-term support can have just as much impact on the success and total cost of the project.
Four stories. One shift.
The customer stopped buying a display and started buying a system.
Most proposals have not caught up.
Ask the Revenue Question First
Any screen in a public-facing space might one day carry paid media.
That question costs nothing during discovery and a great deal after installation.
Quote the System, Not the Panel
Controller, signal path, service access and integration all belong in the conversation.
Price per square foot is a conversation you can only lose.
Make Integration a Line Item
What the display, kiosk or network connects to is scope.
Scope that is not written down is scope you deliver for free.
That last point is where this began.
Our Large-Format Display Decision Guide compares Large-Format LCD, All-in-One LED and Modular LED on the terms that actually decide a project, not simply the terms that fill a spec sheet.
Take it into your next opportunity.
Then tell us where it held up and where it did not.
Bring us the opportunity and what the customer actually said.
We’ll bring the system design, configuration and numbers.
That is how the next issue of ILLUMINATE gets written.
